Mission Statement
We at CeaseSPIN are convinced that, as a nation and on the issue of reforming the news media, we must either pull together or be pulled apart. CeaseSPIN is dedicated to uniting voices in support of a return to more objective, truthful, fair, balanced, relevant and representative news reporting; halting the decline of objective news reporting and promoting the CeaseSPIN "News Quality Rating System".
Our purpose is to encourage news organizations, through consumer/viewer activism, to label on-air news segments (content) with consumer recognizable journalism ethics quality rating information, to enable consumers to make choices based on the level of journalism ethics associated with news content.
Paramount is our concern for a return to journalistic excellence in news media, discouraging misinformation, encouraging appropriate source disclosures, proper identification of "expert analysts" and disclosure of contributor bias and the preservation of free speech and a free press.
The News Rating System is developed jointly with citizens, media producers, advocacy and government as a non-partisan anti-censorship solution that puts the responsibility of the rating process in the hands of the content producers.
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable company, incorporated in the State of New Jersey (File# 0100996735).
We are a member of Common Cause and the Media and Democracy Coalition (www.media-democracy.com)
We are currently working with the Coalition for Independent Ratings Services (www.independentratings.org)
Our Goals
• CeaseSPIN will raise public awareness of legislative opportunities that will lead to improvements in news reporting.
• CeaseSPIN will work with several prominent media reform groups to advocate for a News Quality Ratings System that results from true grass roots organizing.
• CeaseSPIN will leverage public support to develop a “News Quality Rating System” based on spj.org journalism ethics to benefit consumers and encourage more ethical journalism.
